Due to the large crowd at last year’s Vollwerth’s Meats WINTERNATIONALS Snowmobile Hillclimb, the event is expanding. Expanding in different ways.
This popular Hillclimb will go from one day to two days. It will be February 5th and 6th. The first day will be the qualifying and the finals in the 120cc classes for the Kids, along with Junior, Vintage 1 and Vintage 2, all will have both the qualifying and the Finals.
Pro Stock, Pro Mod, Snow Bike, Spirit, and Women’s class qualifying will begin on Saturday, Feb 5th. The finals in all those classes, including the King of the Hill runs will be on Sunday, Feb 6th.
Triest Forest Products, owners of the property has invested in Fan and Racer Parking. “Last year we ran out of fan parking at 12:30 pm. Some people were parked on the entrance road, then walking in. We’re hoping that problem is solved this year,” stated Chris Crosby of the MASTERS Racing Circuit.
The MASTERS is an acronym for Mid America Snow and Terrain Expert Racers. This is the sanctioning race circuit of the Hillclimb.
Fan Parking has been expanded in areas where the fans can watch the hillclimb from their vehicle. The Public Address System has also been improved so the fans can hear who is climbing Whealkate and how they finish.
Work has also been done on Whealkate Hill. Water Bars were put in to hold back the erosion. Those Water Bars also made it even more difficult for the Snowmobiles and Snow Bikes to make it over the top of the hill.
“During the Motorcycle Hillclimb, I fortunately was the only one to make it over the top. That shows how difficult the hill is now. It will be that difficult for the Snowmobiles and Sno Bikes also,” exclaimed Mike Kirtland of Mass City.
The Vollwerth’s Meats WINTERNATIONALS will be a ‘tune-up’ for one of the biggest Snowmobile Hillclimbs in the entire Midwest. That is the Copper Peak Hillclimb on Feb 19th and 20th, north of Ironwood. The MASTERS sanctioned hillclimb’s at Copper Peak 15 years ago. The last hillclimb there was in 2010. This event is sponsored by Copper Peak Ski Flying Association and Fly Racing.
The Copper Peak Snowmobile Hillclimb is a fund-raiser as the volunteers of the Copper Peak Ski Flying Association continues to work in bringing Ski Flying back to the biggest Ski Flying jump in the Western Hemisphere.
The following weekend, the MASTERS is going to hold a Terra-X race at the Iron County Fairgrounds in Saxon, Wisconsin. This event will have 120’s, Juniors, Trail Riders, and 2 Pro Classes running a course consisting of ‘woops,’ hairpin turns, jumps, and a groomed wide turn like they had years ago on Snow packed oval racing.
“The Terra-X form of racing is a lot of fun for everyone! We run time trials of one sled at a time, then the 3 fastest sleds advance to the Semi-Finals and the Finals in each class. Right now the White Thunder Riders are building the course,” explained Crosby.
The Terra-X will run on Saturday Feb. 26th, it is co-sponsored by the Hurley Area Chamber of Commerce and the White Thunder Riders. It is also sanctioned by the MASTERS Racing Circuit.
