Pro Stock King of the Hill

Michigan Snowmobilers dominate in Duluth!

When one looks at the results of the March 17th and 18th MASTERS-sanctioned snowmobile races outside of Duluth, they would have thought the races were held in the Western Upper Peninsula. Every class in the Minnesota State Championship Hillclimb was won by an Upper Peninsula U.P. racer. In the Grand Nationals Snow Drags, Michigan racers took 7 of 9 classes.

After sweeping both of the Ojibwa Casino WINTERNATIONALS Hillclimb in South Range, Hubbell’s Jimmy Marietta won both the Pro Stock and Pro Mod King of the Hill. If that isn’t impressive enough, Marietta went to Mont du Lac and won EVERY Pro Mod Class. This is the first time in the 20+ years of the MASTERS-sanctioning professional snowmobile hillclimbs that the circuit didn’t even have two racers to conduct a Pro Mod King of the Hill.

If it wasn’t for a Michigan Tech student, Jordan Wolfe, Marietta would have clinched the Pro Stock King of the Hill. Wolfe, from the Ironwood area, did force a Pro Stock “shoot-out.” Wolfe posted his best time of the day in the Pro Stock King of the Hill, only to have Marietta come back and narrowly edge Wolfe by less than a second.

Al Turin, Top Gun Champion

In the Grand Nationals Snow Drags, Greenland’s Al Turin basically clinched a third consecutive MASTERS/Ojibwa Casino TOP GUN Championship for the year. Turin defeated former Hurley resident and Polaris Industries employee Nick Gustafson in the TOP GUN Final. It was the same two that had the same results from the U.P. Championships, held in January in Ontonagon.

Turin now has a 6-point lead going into the final race of the year at Marquette Mountain at Marquette, Michigan. While the Yamaha racer has not mathematically clinched the season TOP GUN Championships, it would be difficult for Gustafson to win the title.

Chris Nordang, Magic Champ

While the season championship in TOP GUN may be over before the Marquette Mountain race, the debut of the MAGIC Class is going to go down to what happens on April 7. Iron River’s Chris Nordang on an Arctic Cat defeated the Chop City team’s Kyle Nash in the finals. Nash and his team travelled from Traverse City to Mont du Lac. It was Chris and Tracy Nordang’s son, and Tom and Lynda’s grandson, CJ Nordang, who won the Pro Mod 850 final.

Lake Linden’s Jerry Buschell on a Ski-doo continued his 4-year domination in the Pro Mod 700 class. His neighbor, Tom Hodges, and Arctic Cat is coming closer to being first in crossing the 500-foot finish line in this class.

It is not just at the races outside of Duluth that proves the fact that the MASTERS Racing Circuit has some of the top professional snowmobile racers throughout the nation, but the fact that when these MASTERS Racing Circuit racers go to non-sanctioned snowmobile races…THEY WIN!

The MASTERS Racing Circuit will end the season with the Marquette Mountain “Tri-Fecta” on April 7. In addition to the long running MASTERS/Ojibwa Casino Snow Drag Championships, the MASTERS will hold a hillcross race and the World Championship KIDS Climb. Hillcross is a combination of a Drag Race and Snow Cross. Two racers will race “side by side” up the hill. The straight-line race will include jumps that propel the snowmobiles high into the air. The World Championship KIDS Climb has children between the ages of 5 and 12 racing the small 120 cc sleds up a hillclimb course.

Krans Sweeps, Burrows King

Aurora’’s Tony Krans swept every class at Saturday’’s Wisconsin State Championship Hillcross, and South Haven, Michigan’’s Cory Burrows edged out Menominee, Michigan’s Layne Stank to win the Mid America Championship Hillclimb. Both events took place at Keyes Peak in Florence, Wisconsin.

Krans won his second straight TOP DOG at the Wisconsin State Championship Hillcross, sanctioned by the Mid America Snow & Terrain Expert Racers (MASTERS). Krans held off Hastings, Minnesota’s Luke Maher in Hillcross’s Featured Class.

Burrows qualified for the King of the Hill Shoot-out by winning both the Pro Mod 600 and Pro Open Stock class. Stank won three classes: Pro Open Mod, Pro Stock 850, and Pro Stock 600. Stank earned three runs in the King of the Hill and Burrows had two shots at the steep Keyes Peak ‘cliff.

Stank drew the 1st, 4th and 5th runs in the shoot-out. Burrows drew the 2nd and 6th runs. Stank started off with an amazing 43.35-second run. Burrows then notched the fastest time of the entire day with a 40.60-second run. Stank had a 43.84-second run and ended his chance at the $500 ‘winner take all,’ with a 43.61-second run. That gave the southeast Michigan professional snowmobile hillclimber the title of King of the Hill.

“”There were a couple spots on the hill, including coming out of the first gate where I felt I could have made some time up on Cory (Burrows),”” remarked Stank. “I’’ve won a lot of MASTERS Hillclimb classes over the years, but only taken a couple King titles. I wanted it, but I also admire and respect the talent and sportsmanship of Cory.

“”I watched Layne (Stank) and saw where he had a good line. I thought if I could run that line, I could post a good time,” “stated Burrows.

Stank is one of only two snowmobile hillclimbers to be in the MASTERS Hall of Fame. Stank has qualified to represent the MASTERS and the Midwest at this year’’s World Championship Hillclimb in Jackson, Wyoming. Burrows joins Luke Maher and Tony Krans in also qualifying for this year’’s World Championship.

In addition to a clean sweep in Hillcross, Krans had a ‘high-mark’ to win the Junior Class during the Hillclimb.

Earlier in the day, Krans started off with a win in the Junior class, then took the Trail Stock Feature and the Race Stock Feature. The high-flying Krans topped it off with the win in the TOP DOG Final.

Florence’’s Blake Drewa swept the 120 Stock Final in Hillcross and the Kids 120 Stock King in Hillclimb. Harvey, Michigan’s Braden Rose followed suit by winning the 120 Mod Final in Hillcross and the Kids 120 Mod King in Hillclimb.

The MASTERS’ next event will be the Ojibwa Casino WINTERNATIONALS Snowmobile Hillclimb at Whealkate Bluff on Saturday, March 3. Whealkate Bluff is located in South Range, Michigan, and is considered one of the steepest and most challenging hillclimbs throughout the entire Midwest.

The last time a hillclimb was held at Whealkate Bluff was 2011.

Shilts and Felver win Feature Classes at UP Championship Snow Drags

New Richmond, Wisconsin’s Kelly Shilts and Owosso, Michigan’s Scott Felver won the Pro Outlaw and TOP GUN Features at the UP Championship Snow Drags. This was the first race in the Ojibwa Casino Racing Series for the season.

Shilts hit speeds well over 100 MPH on the hard packed 500 foot lanes with his D & D Powersports Arctic Cat Turbo. Taking a second was Howell, Michigan’s Nick Stilson on the Jaws Performance Arctic Cat, with the Pat’s Motorsports Yamaha piloted by Greenland, Michigan’s, Al Turin taking a 3rd.

While Stilts was expected to be the one to beat in Pro Outlaw, the driver that was expected to win the TOP GUN Feature was Laurium’s Jerry Biuschell. Buschell is the defending TOP GUN Champion, and the MASTERS Racing Circuit’s number one Snow Drag Racer. Buschell advanced to the feature, but took a 3rd.

Winning the TOP GUN Feature was the Lower Michigan Arctic Cat racer, Scott Felver. Taking a second was Greenland’s Al Turin on the Yamaha Push Turbo.

“While it was the ‘UP Championships,’ it was Wisconsin, Lower Michigan, and Minnesota based drivers that made the trip to Ontonagon worthwhile! The competition for this years races were some of the fastest snowmobiles on snow!” commented MASTERS Racing Circuit President, Skip Schulz.

MASTERS stands for Mid America Snow and Terrain Expert Racers, and is one of the longest running snowmobile sanctioning race circuits in the Midwest. The MASTERS will sanction 12 events this winter, along with the upcoming January 30th, Ojibwa Casino Vintage/Antique Snowmobile Show at the Big Bucks Bingo Hall, located next to the Ojibwa Casino in Baraga.

While Upper Peninsula racers did win some of the classes, it was Stilson’s team from Lower Michigan that captured Pro Mod 600 class, Race Stock 600, and Trail Stock Open classes. Stilson had Florence, Wisconsin’s Nate Wicklund run his sled to a victory in the Race Stock 600, while Alan Dibler took Trail Stock Open. Stiilson won the Pro Mod 600.

The Minnesot-based Bikeman Performance team had Anthiny Amundson in the winner’s circle with a win in Race Stock 800.

Upper Peninsula drivers that ‘held serve’ on home turf included Mohawk’s John Mihelich in Pro Mod 800. It was in a Quarterfinal that Buschell ‘wheelied’ is sled. When his sled hooked up to the point of standing it ‘straight up,’ he lost to much ground, thus advancing West-Central Wisconsin’s Drew Minkel and Mohawk’s John Mihelich.

Both Minkel and Miheloch would breeze through the Semi’s and advance to an exciting feature, where Mihelich edged out Minkel by inch’s. Star Prairie, Wisconsin’s Justin Nelson took a 3rd.

“While TOP GUN and Outlaw will get a lot of attention, I think the Pro Mod 800 class is going to be one of the most competitive this year. Remember, we had some of our top drivers in this class that were eliminated early in the day. Such as CJ Nordang of Iron River (MI), the Copper Country’s Tom Hodges, and Buschell,” Schulz stated.

Buschell kept his 4 year unbeaten streak going by winning Pro Mod 700. However Hodges is narrowing the gap at the finish line and took a second. Stilson took a 3rd.

“Once again the fans really loved the kids racing the 120’s. It was good to also have the Junior Drivers racing,” remarked Ontonagon County Economic Partnership President, Bill Fisher.

Harvey, Michigan’s Braden Rose won the 120 Mod class over Champion’s Nathan Lacosse, while Carter Lacosse beat Ryan Holstrom of Ontonagon This was Holmstrom’s first race.

Florence, Wisconsin’s Nate Wicklund and Greenland’s Wyatt McIntyre thrilled the crowd in the Junior Class. Wicklund took a 1st with McIntyre taking a second. The 13 year old Wicklund also won theTrail Stock 600 class and Race Stock 600.

After the Jan 30th Ojibwa Casino Vintage/Antique Show, the MASTERS Ojibwa Casino series will head to Caspian, Michigan for the Mid America Championship Hillclimb. This is the first of 2 Snowmobile Hillclimbs that are qualifiers for this year’s World Championship Hillclimb in Jackson, Wyoming. The following weekend, the MASTERS will hold the Wisconsin State Championship Hillcross and Hillclimb at Keye’s Peak in Florence, Wisconsin. The Hillclimb at Keyes Peak will be the final qualifier for this years World Championship Hillclimb.

Kaurala and Stank win at Mid America Championship Hillclimb in Caspian, Michigan

Snowmobile Hillclimbers from 3 states met at this past Saturday’s Mid America Championship Hillclimb (MACH). The MACH took place at the former Caspian Ski Jump. A hill that took its toll on drivers and snowmobilers. A hill that only allowed 3 drivers crest the top and make it through the Timing Shute.

With a total of 77 attempts at making it over the top, 68 of those runs failed. The Lindwall Motors Pro Stock 700 class, no one made it over the top in either of the runs, it was High Mark that determined who would win and represent that class in the Bar Enterprises Pro Stock King of the Hill.

4 different drivers qualified for the Pro Stock King of the Hill. A shoot-out that was won by Travis Kaurala of Alston (MI) by going the farthest up the Hill. Kaurala and Jordan Stank of Stoughton, Wisconsin, were the only two drivers to advance to the Ojibwa Casino Pro Mod King of the Hill. It was Stank that edged out Kaurala by only going a few feet higher up the hill to win the Pro Mod King of the Hill.

The event, sanctioned by the Mid America Snow and Terrain Expert Racers, commonly know as the MASTERS, joined with the fans in awe when a first time Hillclimber not only made it over the top, but had one of the fastest times of the day. That driver, Bob Berghuis of Brillon, Wisconsin, turned in a record breaking run of 34.469 seconds in the Wild Rivers Realty Pro Stock 800 class. This amazing run in the first round was beat when Stank followed Berghuis with a 34.308. That was the only class that two drivers turned in a time in the same class.

Berghuis would go on to make it over the top in a 36.953 run in the First National Bank Open Stock class.

“This is the first time I ever competed in something as extreme as this,” commented the excited young Berghuis.

It was Jordan Stank’s father, Layne, from Menomonee (MI) that won the Lindwall Motors Pro Stock Class by making it all the way to the 5th gate, before the Hill took its toll on the driver and the sled. The hill had a total of 5 gates before the Timing Shute at the top of the hill. It was between the 4th and 5th gate in the first round, and between the 3rd and 4th gate in the second round where a majority of the sleds either got stuck or ended up rolling down the hill.

“The results show how difficult the MACH at Caspian is. 77 shots at the hill in the first two rounds, and only 9 made it over the top, and of that 9 that set a time, only 3 drivers accomplished the amazing feat of making it over the top,” stated MASTERS Racing Circuit President, Skip Schulz.

What has thrilled the fans for the last 4 years is when the 4 to 9 year olds run the 120cc WIKB “Kid” King. For the 2nd year in a row, Bessemer, Michigan’s, Keegan Boggetto edged out his younger brother, Nolan, and Braden Rose of Harvey, Michigan. This was Braden’s first time Hillclimbing.

The MASTERS now heads East to Florence, WIsconsin, this coming weekend for the Wisconsin State Championship Hillclimb and Hillcross. The events will take place at Keyes Peak, with the Hillclimb running on Saturday and Hillcross running on Sunday. The Keyes Peak Hillcross will be the first Hillcross in this years Ojibwa Casino/MASTERS Hillcross series. Hillcross has 2 to 3 snowmobiles racing side by side up the hill, with the hill having table top and double jumps. Saturday’s Hillclimb will be the final qualifier for this year’s World Championship Hillclimb in Jackson, Wyoming.

The MASTERS will also run Snow Drags and Hillcross at Marquette Mountain, Marquette, Michigan, on April 4th and 5th. The MASTERS season will end with the Mont du Lac Hillclimb, The Nationals Hillcross, and the Snow Drag Nationals at Mont du Lac on April 10th and 11th. Mont du Lac is located outside of Duluth, Minnesota.
